My Friend, PPP and I went to London several years ago. It was here we were introduced to the musical stylings of The Mike Flowers Pops. Though they had several great songs, including "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina (The Pri Madonna Mix), these are the only two videos I can find...and they're high camp at its best! Enjoy.

7 Days of Pride, Pt. 7b
Somewhere
Many years ago, when I lived in LA, every year, I used to go to Pride Parade in WeHo. It was always a 3-day nonstop party. It was absolutely insane, but it was always the party. In those days, I was never political, just a WeHo pretty party boy. A few months before this annual event, a friend of mine died of AIDS. It was the mid-80s and I hadn't known anyone that had died from this disease.
I went to the parade, with party on my mind. The parade in West Hollywood, is probably one of the best attended parades in the country. This day was no exception. This particular year, I was not a go-go dancer on the Studio One float. I came this year with my mom. This was her first parade. I warned her about the decadence that would soon follow. The floats were crazy, loud and very festive.
About fifty men were walking through the crowd handing out balloons of every color of the pride flag. They said "Hold on to your balloon until you're told to release it."
Toward the end of the parade was a float, a giant flatbed with about a hundred men with AIDS and their supporters. The PA system played "Somewhere" from West Side Story. As the float passed by, we released our balloons, all 250,000 of us. As I released my balloon, I thought of my recently passed friend, Jeff.
"There's a place for us,
Somewhere a place for us.
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us
Somewhere.
There's a time for us,
Some day a time for us,
Time together with time to spare,
Time to look, time to care,
Someday!
Somewhere.
We'll find a new way of living,
We'll find a way of forgiving
Somewhere.
There's a place for us,
A time and place for us.
Hold my hand and we're half way there.
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow,
Someday,
Somewhere!"
As the balloons floated away, the sky filled with our rainbow.
It was one of the most incredible moments in my life as I let go of Jeff's balloon.
Each time I hear this song, I remember Jeff and I smile.

7 Days of Pride, Pt 6a
Earlier this year, our friend Paul, told us about a must-see movie, Latter Days. A guaranteed tear-jerker about Christian, a Scene Queen (Wes Ramsey) and Aaron, a Mormon Missionary (Steve Sandvoss). Aaron is very naive about the world around him and Christian is naive about his feelings within. Christian accepts a $50 bet with his buddies that he can bed the Mormon boy. They begin to fall in love until...Oops, that would be a spoiler.
As with many movies of this genre, I thought this would be a bowl of cotton candy. Instead, it was a beautiful movie with a "I won't tell you" ending. Don't rent it, buy it. You'll want to see it more than once.
Here's the trailer...
This film shows the fears, struggles, hatred, and discrimination gays and lesbians still face; The scene where Aaron is confronted by his parents is nothing short of brutal. However, I look forward to watching this movie again, in say 20 years, looking over to Matt and asking, "Do you remember when society treated us like that?" Hopefully, he'll say, "No, that was so long ago."
BTW-I love Jacqueline Bisset's speech at the end of the film.

7 Days of Pride, Pt. 5
Brokeback Mountain
Last year, as most of us know, a gay-themed movie was nominated for an Oscar as were both the two leads. Audiences across the country wept as Ennis and Jack, the star-crossed lovers, came to their tragic ends. Countless fan videos and parodies popped-up like everywhere. In my opinion, this is the best. It is to the original soundtrack performed by Gustavo Santaolalla.
This video has no words, they aren't needed here.
Rufus Wainwright recorded one of the songs for the soundtrack. His pining voice fits well with this movie. This clip has a brief introduction from the artist explaining the song.
Perhaps, one day, we'll see a movie win an Oscar where the two gay heroes actually live there lives together "happily ever after."

7 Days of Pride, Pt. 4
Yesterday, I gave nods to the BBC for a GLBT kiss. Today, I raise my coffee mug to a gay romance on (gasp) American network TV.
Buffy, the Vampire Slayer's Willow and Tara's beautiful romance is "non-eyebrow raising." It's not done for laughs. It's done for character development. Wow, what a concept.
In this new millennium, it seems that gays and Lesbians are finally able to show affection on TV. We have come along ways since Lost in Space's Dr. Smith!
"Lost in ecstasy, spread beneath my Willow tree."

7 Days of Pride. Pt 3.
These Times, they are a Changin'
In my lifetime, I have watched a revolution, slow, but a revolution none the less.
The Stonewall Riots meant nothing to me when it happened as I was a child. But from it grew a movement that allows me to live with my partner as an accepted member of our neighborhood.
Growing up, gays on TV were always the butt of some joke. We were depicted as effeminate, boozing, weak and self-loathing. Even the Jodie on the 1970's sitcom Soap wanted to be a woman.
Steven Carrington on 1980's Dynasty was torn apart by his homosexuality. Most shows on TV continued to show gays as secondary characters that seemed content to live in the shadows.
Then, 1998, along came Will & Grace. The first show that I remember that had one of the central characters, Will Truman, as a normal person. "There's no way this show could last" I thought....no straight person will watch it. I remember being at a work function that went on into the evening hours. Someone said, "Let's take a break; Will and Grace is on." Everyone, including the straight men sat around the TV. They laughed...but more importantly, they cared. Will helped a lot of straight people see that were really not that much different from them. But the series didn't really show a lot of passion. Maybe that's why it was so successful with puritan American audiences.
Jump forward another 10 years to present day. There is a show in the UK called Torchwood. Earlier this year, this show had one of the most touching scenes. It was beautiful. The full plot can be found on Wikipedia here. Today, there are more and more gay characters on TV, and most of America accepts them, as our neighbors accept us.

7 Days of Pride, Pt. 2
"I'm Coming Out...oh, you already knew???"
I was actually at the concert at the Forum in LA. It was a night I will never forget. The power and sheer charisma of this megastar left the audience enchanted. If you view the videos (Home, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Upside Down, Reach out and Touch) from this event, you'll see a crowd of nearly 20,000 people in utter awe. Miss Ross turned songs into events. Diana's songs became for many, life's very soundtrack.
I mean, how many weddings have played "Endless Love"? And how many of us played "Touch Me in the Morning" after breaking up? But it was "I'm Coming Out" empowered a generation to be themselves.

With just 7 days till Seattle's Pride Parade, I wanted to post a series of relevant videos. Here's the first. I found it at The Commercial Closet.
Too bad it the commercial was for an insurance company and not Lily's Leotards or Aquanet!

De Duva
In 1968, a brilliant short film was made called "De Düva: The Dove." It was a hysterical parody of Ingmar Bergman's films. I remember watching this many years ago, after a night of heavy clubbing. Not realizing at first that it was a farce, I followed along with the subtitles thinking, "Hmmm Swedish isn't that hard to understand."
Then appeared the incredible Madeline Kahn in her first role. Not wanting to give away the plot, I can only tell you what follows is a famous line that Matt and I love to quote; a quote that fits just about anywhere.
Anyone want a cigar???

This Is Hot....and Don't You Forget It!
With summer quickly approaching and things warming up, I thought this would be a perfect post. Here is the amazing Pamala Stanley singing her classic, "This Is Hot."
I had the opportunity to see Miss Stanley perform at Studio One in WeHo. What a show! twenty-something years later, I still remember how she had the entire audience mesmerized...especially when she pulled out her disco fans to "Coming out of Hiding."
Don't you just love her 1970s Robot Dance???

A Mighty Wind
Matt and I love the mocmentaries that Christopher Guest and his troop create. "Best in Show" and "Waiting for Guffman" are among our favorite movies. "A Mighty Wind" however, is simply a masterpiece of hilarity. We think one of the funniest parts of the movie, is near the end when the ensemble sings the title song. When my mom came to visit a while back, we just had to share this gem with her. When the movie came to the part where they sang the above mentioned song, she broke down crying. As tears streamed down her face, she looked at us both with a proud mother's love. Sobbing, she said that she felt a Mighty Wind was coming. She said the time will come where our relationship would soon be recognized. She sobbed, "It's blowing peace and freedom. It's blowing equality."
By the way, today, state lawmakers voted Thursday to keep a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage off the 2008 ballot during a joint session of the Massachusetts House and Senate.
I love you, mom, not just for the unconditional love you've always shown me, but for the same love you show Matt. It's people like you that will empower this Mighty Wind.

June 12 of 12
Well, here it is, my first 12 of 12.
Kudos to Chad for this fun diversion!
This is my coffee mug. We bought this while in Hawaii last summer.
Ahhh, coffee! It's how I start each day.

Here's our 10-month old puppy, Kali.
I can't tell if she's laughing or yawning.

This is our flag. It's not just out for the holidays...but to celebrate our country every day.
(Still, Flag Day is Thursday!)

Meet Charlie Chinchilla. If you give him a raisin, he'll sing showtunes.
He does a great impersonation of Elaine Paige!

Here is Schotz, our macaw. He's a camera whore.

These are some of the photos above my desk.
Notice the great picture at the top of Matt and me.
Last year, Matt sent me a wonderful quote from Tammy Baldwin - an openly gay congresswoman from Wisconsin.
"If you want to live in the kind of world where you can put a picture of your partner on your desk, then put a picture of your partner on your desk, and you will live in that kind of world."
I did. Notice the picture of Matt and me (with Tiki Bob) in Honolulu last June.

Matt and I have been thinking about buying a camper. While on the way home, I saw this one.
It can't be too much money...

Speaking of too much money...

This sign has been sitting in front of our house for about a week now.
Tomorrow, I may move it somewhere random.

Matt found the Holy Grail of 80's Music Videos, Jackie by Blue Zone UK, on one of our favorite blogs, Here's the 80's. It's a great site, check it out!!!

This is Hunter, the polydactyl cat. He's an incredible cat...
Not just because he has opposable thumbs...but because he thinks he's a puppy.
And he has the highest pitch meow I've ever heard.

Damn pansies!

Okay...now for the 12 of 12 extra photo, "Secret"
I have a shopping compulsion. That's not the secret, it's well known.
But today I went to Linens 'N Things and I bought a really nice down pillow for 75% off.
I haven't told Matt yet...it's hiding in the closet. (The pillow, not Matt)

Love Is....
I am a very musical person. This does not mean that I play piano, clarinet, guitar, or even the kazoo. All I can play is my iPod. I have an 80 gig iPod. Within three weeks of owning it, it was full. Now to add a song, I have to delete something...always a hard choice. It's like asking someone which of their pets would they mind selling to a Chinese restaurant the least. What to do? What to do?
Some may look at my iPod and think I am obsessive. "Dude, you have 12,038 songs, 1,218 music videos, and over 1,000 photos. It should be easy to slice and dice to make room more something new.
The answer is "NO"
Most every song is a memory. Every music video is like a memory, but it's super-sized. And photos, they speak louder than words so they are almost equal with songs. Any of this make sense??? No?
Well, let me post four songs that no matter where I am in the world, bring me home to the Matt and the nurturing love he provides. He is my home...and when I'm away, it's how I find him within.
The first is "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge.
The second, "No Matter What" was written by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Great lyrics, great song!
"And I will keep you safe and strong; shelter from the storm. No matter where it's barren, our dream is being born."
Next is the magnificent Miss Celine Dion. Her version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is like the first rain after a long drought. As if the words will never satisfy the parched soul listening to this brilliant song.
The first time Matt and I held each other, I thought my heart was going to burst right there in my chest. I thought I was so out of my league....but was there a chance this man is sharing these incredible feelings? I, too, felt my heart beat like "the trembling heart of a captive bird."
Last but certainly not least, is Westlife and their version of "You Raise Me Up." What a simple song that is so powerful. Both of us have realized we are better people because of each other. The confidence we find from each other is truly amazing....as we find we soar in each other's pride.
It's nearly 10 years later, and still find I am so in love with man...he makes me a better person...and everyday I am grateful.

A win for Freedom of Speech
The Bush Administration's continued attacks on our civil rights hit a road block today. Since Bush took office, we have seen many of our liberties eroded. When the administration placed Colin Powell's son as head of the FCC, he made it his mandate to "protect" us from things they thought we shouldn't hear or see. Freedom of Speech, they believe only applies some of the time. Today, I heard the following story on NPR, and it made me smile.
Blurted Obscenities Don't Breach Decency
Morning Edition, June 5, 2007 · A federal appeals panel ruled that blurted obscenities do not violate decency standards. The decision was a strong rebuke of the Federal Communications Commission. Under President Bush, the FCC has taken a much harder line on airing profanities — even unscripted expletives during live broadcasts. Four major TV networks faced multimillion-dollar indecency fines. But the judges ruled in their favor, saying that if President Bush and Vice President Cheney can blurt out profanities, then the government can't punish TV stations for doing the same.

Hero
When I lived in LA, I used to see a lot of singers perform at some of the gay clubs. Some of them, like the ever-so-talented (not!) Racquel Welch were obviously uncomfortable and their concerts really suffered.
Recently, Enrique Iglesias performed at a gay night club in London. For his mushy ballad Hero, Enrique actually invited a male member from his audience on stage and gave him the serande of his life.
I have a whole new respect for Mr. Iglesias. Lots of performers will do a concert in a gay venue and gladly take our money...but few will go the extra mile like Enrique did here in this video.
